About Culture Beat

Culture Beat is a German Eurodance project whose story has been shaped by changing vocalists and a hit that has endured far beyond the 1990s. Its most successful line-up paired Tania Evans’ vocals with Jay Supreme’s rap passages.

The project was founded in 1989 by Torsten Fenslau, then a DJ at Frankfurt’s Dorian Gray. Its first single, „Der Erdbeermund“, still featured Jo van Nelsen’s spoken German delivery. Culture Beat then found the rap-and-vocal combination that would define its path with Jay Supreme as rapper and Lana Earl as singer.

When Tania Evans replaced Lana Earl in 1993, „Mr. Vain“ brought the international breakthrough, reaching number one in 13 countries. The album „Serenity“ was also a major success, selling more than two million copies. Fenslau died in a car accident later that same year, and his brother Frank continued the project. In 1995, „Inside Out“ followed as another album featuring Evans and Supreme, although it did not match the success of its predecessor.

The voices changed again later on, while the sound moved further towards pop in 1998. Culture Beat continues to appear on 1990s revival stages with Jacky Sangster and rapper MC 4T.
