NANA

NANA is the stage name of Nana Kwame Abrokwa, a German rapper and DJ born in Ghana who combined hip-hop with Eurodance. Under the name Darkman, he delivered one of Germany’s major late-nineties hits with “Lonely”.

His musical career began in the early nineties as a DJ in hip-hop clubs. As MC Africa True, he rapped on tracks by DJ David Fascher before joining the Eurodance project Darkness in 1994. It was there that the name Darkman emerged, but he did not feel at home with the group’s musical direction and soon went his own way again.

In 1996, the newly founded label Booya Music signed him as its first artist, and his release “Darkman” reached the German top ten. His breakthrough followed in 1997 with “Lonely”, which reached number one in Germany and Switzerland and went platinum in Germany. His self-titled debut album was also awarded platinum in Poland and gold in Germany and Switzerland.

His story links the hip-hop clubs of the early nineties with the Eurodance boom and the unmistakable hit that still connects NANA with that era today.
