About Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo
Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo took Dutch Happy Hardcore to major stages in the nineties without losing touch with their roots in harder Gabber. Behind the names are Ramon Roelofs and Theo Nabuurs, two DJs and producers who became known for both euphoric melodies and hard-hitting Hardcore tracks.
They met in Utrecht in the early nineties at a Mallorca reunion after both had DJed on the island. They quickly joined forces, first touring as Speedcity before later releasing music together on Roelofs’ label. With „Live At London“, they adopted a brighter sound in 1994, paving the way for their major Happy Hardcore successes.
Their breakthrough came with „Wonderful Days“, which brought them international recognition and was certified gold in the Netherlands. Theo came up with the idea after accidentally playing a Tony Ronald record at 45 rpm one night; when the record company would not approve its use, the pair re-recorded the passage in question with Albert West. Hits including „Stars“ and „Your Smile“ followed, while the duo alone played 325 shows in 1995.
After splitting up in 2001, Roelofs and Nabuurs later returned to festival stages together. In 2019, they celebrated their anniversary with two sold-out nights at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome. They played their final concert together there on 30 July 2022, leaving behind a sound where Happy Hardcore euphoria and the harder side of rave sit side by side.
