About CHARLY LOWNOISE
Charly Lownoise, whose real name is Ramon Roelofs, is one of the defining DJs and producers in Dutch Happy Hardcore. His music combines high speed and energy with the catchy side of the genre that he and Mental Theo helped popularise in the final decade of the twentieth century.
He started out as a teenager at school parties before DJing in clubs in his hometown of The Hague and producing his own tracks from 1989. He attracted attention in 1991 with “Rave This Nation” under the name RJ’s Rule; soon afterwards, Ramon Roelofs became Charly Lownoise. Meeting Theo Nabuurs led to the duo Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo, while he also released music on his own label, Master Maximum Records.
“Wonderful Days” brought the pair their major breakthrough, followed by a string of further hits in the middle of that decade. However, the demanding performance schedule came at a cost: in 1997, Charly Lownoise collapsed from exhaustion during a performance. After his time with Mental Theo, he found new directions through projects including Starsplash and Topmodelz, particularly in the German market.
Away from music, he has spent years exploring Zen and teaching meditation – a calm counterpoint to the pace of his rave world. Charly Lownoise remains active on stage: as recently as 2024, he was still travelling for an appearance at a show celebrating that decade.
